When Chrysler bought AMC in 1987, in a lengthy transaction which involved extensive dealings with Renault, many were afraid that the venerable AMC plants would be closed, and that Jeep would be bent out of recognition. Chrysler, though, seemed to know what they were doing, aside from the exceedingly regrettable demolition of a parts depot; they invested in existing Jeep plants, and didn’t immediately start replacing Jeeps with Dodges, or rebadging Dodges as Jeeps, or rebadging Jeeps as Dodges.

This is my 1986 Jeep Comanche 2wd 4 cyl. 4 speed. It has half a V8, a non-automatic transmission, air-no-conditioning, power-no-windows, power-no-door locks, power-no-steering. It also has un-tinted windows. It boasts a hardly rocking stereo system with two invisible subwoofers powered by an invisible amp which are so loud that they are inaudible. It is faster than all things slower than it and only slower than the faster ones. It was the second most awesome birthday present ever! (I got a daugther in '06)

The XJ Cherokee was introduced in 1984 as the first unibody Jeep. Designs of the XJ Cherokee date back to 1978 when a team of American Motors (AMC) and Renault engineers drew several sketches. A few clay models were based on the existing SJ Cherokee. Early sketches of the XJ Cherokee had an European influence, and most of the styling cues were done by AMC engineers. The ongoing debate suggests that Renault sketch artists were involved right after the 1979 partnership with AMC. Noticing that General Motors was developing a new two-door S-10 based Blazer, AMC decided to design an entirely new four-door model, but worried about rollovers Gerald C. Meyers hired one of Ford's best engineers, Roy Lunn to design what is known as the Quadra-Link suspension. François Castaing developed the drivetrain using a much smaller engine than normally found in 4WD vehicles and reduced the weight of the new model.

Kaiser Jeep was purchased by American Motors Corporation in 1970. By 1978, total Jeep production was up to 600 vehicles a day, more than three times what it had been in 1970.
The CJ-7 was introduced in 1976, the first major change in Jeep design for 20 years. It had a slightly longer wheelbase to allow space for an automatic transmission. The new Jeep was available with an optional molded plastic top and steel doors.

Station wagons are as old as the hills. Billy Durant's Star was the first to introduce one, and Ford the first to mass produce them, starting with the Model A. But until after World War II, with a very few exceptions like Bantam, all station wagons had four doors. Credit Willys with two significant innovations in one vehicle: the two-door, all-steel station wagon of 1946. Crosley did too, starting in 1947, but it took the 1949 Plymouth Suburban to take the concept big time.

In 1966, Jeep was a company on the verge of change. Its full name then was Kaiser-Jeep Corporation, and it was the sole U.S. remnant of both the old Willys-Overland and Kaiser-Frazer automobile companies.
